Default Changing mufflers on stock exhaust - 6MPS

Considering the wonderful new laws that the RTA (NSW) has brought in, regarding lowering a vehicle, I can't be bothered doing it till next year when the dust settles a little.

Hence I am now thinking of getting more noise out of the stock exhaust on the 6 MPS. I've searched threads, but they either apply to the 3 MPS, or they don't quite hit the mark for me.

I don't want to replace the whole exhaust system, just merely want more of an engine note, but don't want it droning on the freeway. I am thinking that replacing the mufflers would be the best with something more free flowing. Anyone done similar on the 6MPS? Did you get any CEL's? Also does anyone recommend a particular shop to get this done? What sort of cost would I also be looking at?

Just took a spin in a work mates Golf R32, and they have one of the best stock exhausts I've EVER heard. Now whilst I don't think changing the mufflers on the 6MPS would make it sound like that, I do think a car like the 6MPS needs more of a note, but I don't want to be replacing the whole exhaust system at this stage.

    Cheers,

Changing the mufflers will be sufficient in your case. Plus you can get a bigger tip and get rid of those pea shooters.

Note: if you're going to change the mufflers, may as well get an axle back, which leads to the catback. In all honesty, seems like a waste just doing the mufflers - really should just go and get the catback done.

Have a talk to Kypros, I've been in his car and it sounds very classy - and no drone.

I replaced from the axle back, where the exhaust splits. Got a nice Y piece in place of the stock T piece. Changed the exhaust from this point to 2.5" and the biggest sports mufflers available. This has given the car a nice sound with no excess noise or drone, at any speed. It also made it "feel" more responsive.

Thanks for the Feed back guys, taken on board. Yes, going a Cat back will be ideal but I was looking at it from a cost perspective hence why I thought just the mufflers. Having said that, seeing some of your posts I've decided if I'm going to do it, it'll be a cat back. Might as well do it right!

    Cheers!

I need to get mine re-done as the cheap mufflers that were put on (this was the first mod I had ever done to any car and was none the wiser) have failed, collapsed baffles.

I am looking at a catback, but using stainless steel pipes and mufflers to give a nice note, and better quality. Thinking its going to cost about $1000 ($500 worth of mufflers)

A mechanic mate of mine said to me "get over the idea of the exhaust being the cheapest part of your car".

My failed axle back was $375...you get what you pay for.

If you are going catback you might as well go TBE and get some real performance gains to match the sound.

I got my Corksport catback first, which sounded great but did little for power, then the downpipe which added that extra mungrel to the sound, but really pumped up the performance.

Downpipe + install really pushes up the price though. If you can find someone who will quote you say $500 for the DP install, then consider yourself lucky.

If cost is a factor, stick with 3 inch CB down to 2.75 at the splits and go with some decent mufflers. When you have a bit more money, consider swapping out the 2nd cat for a straight through ($50 mod) but almost as good as a DP without paying the $1000+.

To be quite honest, for me it's more exhaust note than outright power. If I get a mild increase in power which is expected by going a cat back exhaust, then that's great. However I'm quite concious of cost, i.e. I would rather pay for a higher quality exhaust, than try to buy something cheaper and use the money I save to try and get a down pipe as well. For mine, the MPS 6 has enough power to put a smile on my face, a great car for what it is, I just want to give it more character.

ha ha...here we go...this is what I said to my wife:

"Dont worry honey, I'm just going to open up the exhaust a bit and it'll stop there."

Once you pop, you cant stop....intake, intercooler, tune, rims, tyres, braces, speakers, amps, sound deadening and a partridge in a pear tree.

I was thinking of just changing the mufflers also , if the cat back doesn't offer much/any more power than just the mufflers changed what's the point of the extra expense

It's not the mufflers that are hindering flow, it's the T piece. The stock mufflers are only robbing about 5hp compared to straight through mufflers, but they offer the benefit of being tuned to suit the car and from a noise perspective will out perform every after market muffler.

If you're looking for more noise go ahead a change the mufflers, but you'll be lucky to see a 4kw gain. If you're looking for more performance, keep the stock mufflers and replace the mid pipe with a 3 inch into a low angle merge collector going out to 2.5 inch mandrel bent curves that step down to meet the stock flanges on the mufflers.

This low cost option has been proven to give a 19hp (14kw) gain atw, with little to no increase in noise.

Of course you could add a DP later and more than double that gain.

I'm probably getting an axle back exhaust soon (or even the mid pipe aswell after the above post) anywho not sure what size mufflers, exhaust shop recomends either 1.75" or 2", i would like a pretty subtle note. Any advice from someone who has already done this mod?
    Cheers Todd

Best to ask 2XS on pipe size.

He just did the work on my 6MPS (last week) with a turbo back exhaust (except mufflers as they are expensive). He works at Custom Exhaust Specialists.

I was quoted for stainless cat back with mufflers, including install for about $1600. This is probably one of the more expensive exhausts around but the work is quality (look at my post http://www.ozmpsclub.com/forum/intak...aust-6mps.html for some pix).

By the way this exhaust isn't that much louder than stock even though it has a larger pipe and a deleted cat, so if its just noise you want them get some quality mufflers. Expect to pay maybe $600 or so.

    Hope this helps.

I wouldn't bother with doing an axle back.

Just bite the bullet and get a Cat back - who know's give the dudes at MPS Garage a call they might do you a deal!

The most restrictive part of the exhaust is the downpipe, the followed by the T peice at the rear of the car.

Yeah i'm starting to think about gettin the mid pipe and the t-piece changed, leaving the mufflers and just getting the pea shooter tips changed.
Might have to pop into the exhaust shop tomorrow and have a talk.
