It's probably easier to use one of these tools
I just used the oil fitler tool you find at common auto hardware stores
Apart from being tight, its pretty easy considering the location of the oil filter, couldn't ask for it to be much easier.
Unlikely you can twist it off with your hands as it might be greasy, worth a shot though, clean it first for a good grip.
It can be a bit messy so I advise put a tarp or plastic sheeting down incase of spillage

No worries buddy, hope that helps
I went on YouTube for a guide... Very helpfull
Also bought the Mazda specific tool from eBay.
Check this out: FRAM Cartridge Oil Filter change on Mazda 2.3 - YouTube
This is really strange... I went and got the new Cartridge Oil Filter for my 2010 MPS and jacked the car up, dropped the oil and low and behold I have a traditional oil filter on the car..... Im confused.. There was no FRAM Cartridge black plastic lid anywhere... Did the normal oil filter start appearing on the 2011 / 2012 2.3 engines?
Pretty much the same as this filter..... what the hell is going on.. There is definitely no conversion kit it all looks factory...
yep... I had to do the old change the oil and leave the filter on.... guh!
I'll do the filter next time,
I used competition synthetic Penrite 10w 40 as well.... cost me a bomb!... gutted!
Gen 1's had the cartridge filter.
Gen II's were always screw ons.
You were reading a Gen 1 manual.
So for those that do there own oil changes on the Gen 1s,
did you buy the special tool to get the cartridge out or use
a generic strap type oil filter tool?
Cheers Todd
you need a special tool to get it off a Gen1 - strap wont work.
ive converted to a spin on and a fumoto drain plug just to make changes even easier (hardest part is getting my car up as i can't fit my trolley jacks under
Yeah i know that problem, it's a pain too get out the scissor jack
at the start the switch too the trolley jack, i should invest in a low profile
trolley jack.
Cheers Todd
i got socket tool if anyone needs to borrow it and I drive my car onto timber blocks then jack it up, hate switching jacks
Yeah if melb guys need the tool they can borrow my one too.

Where did you guys buy the tool from?
I saw one on Ebay USA.
Cheers Todd
Nz mazda mechanics get them as part of there kits, so when my mate moved over I got him to bring it.
Otherwise no idea, street unit and maybe edge do the conversion kits, not too hard to swap it over....I think it was 5 bolts

i have an oil change coming up soon, i have an adapter to change it from this cartridge type to the normal screw in type, anyone here done the change over themselves? or get a mechanic to do it?
looking at my adapter it doesnt look right, if anyone has any pics etc would be good.
