I've run front DBA 4000 drilled and slotted and 4000 slotted (not on a Mazda) and to be honest I wouldn't bother with drilled and slotted. I didn't find any perceptible difference between them on the street and the slotted were slightly quieter. I was running Ferodo DS2500 pads on both.

When having them fitted by the mechanic/s did he or they machine the discs first???

I've always gotten the rotors machined on every car I've done a pad replacement and have had no issues, and also bedding them in help. A mate of mine didn't listen to my advice and within one week his pads were glazed and his rotors had warped
