    Default Brakes

    Anyone here have any opinions on what brakes are good for a mps, with occasional track days and all?

    Am looking at the ferodo ds2500, but am told that the QFM's are good as well.

    Does the stock brake disc and brake lines withstand track days often ?

    I am using the QFM AR1M's they are great. Have a quick search, there is a great thread around here somwhere that Greg from GSL posted in a few times.

    His thoughts were to upgrade the fluid and pads first, then look into rotors.

    I have heard heaps of good and no bad about the QFM pads.

    Good value too.

    Hi mate,

    As everyone has said (thanks guys! ) QFM A1RM is definitely our pick for a street pad that capable of doing light track work, and is a Ferodo DS2500 equivalent.. I personally run the A1RM in both my rally car, and my road car (which tows the rally car), and it isn't a compromise in either.

    The stock discs and brake lines will be more than adequate for track days. Stock rotors aren't nearly as bad for track days as people make out. Rotors are a heat sink, and stock ones are as good as any when matched with decent pads.

    Stock (rubber) brakes lines are also more than adequate. Generally when people fit braided lines to cars they've simply skirted around an inadequacy in their brake fluid, and more often than not the benefits they perceive is simply from having new lines full stop (be it braided, or new rubber) and by default, having to have fresh fluid at the calipers. Braided lines are good, but don't get too worried about not having them because the truth is, in a road car with near new rubber lines, there's going to be more flex in the firewall under your pedal, than any sort of meaningful expansion in the rubber lines...

    If you want to do a bit of track work, grab yourself:

    1 x QFM A1RM Front $149
    1 x QFM A1RM Rear $119
    1 x 1L Bottle of TRW GP600 Dot 4 Racing Brake Fluid $65 (may need two bottles... depending on car)

    Only then if you've got money left over would I worry about changing rotors.

    With regards to fluid, any serious fluid, or any fluid capable of track work will be over the 300 degree dry boiling point mark. The TRW GP600 that we recommend is 312 degrees dry, which for reference is exactly the same as Motul RBF600. To go higher than that you're looking at silicon fluids (like Castrol SRF or Project Mu G/FOUR335, the later of which we also sell), which are only marginally higher in the 330 degree range, but are ridiculously expensive, and not really suited to road use anyway... For reference, the very popular Castrol Super Response Dot 4 is good for 270 degrees dry. It's enough for most people, but a little too borderline for us to recommend it for heavy duty or track use.

    Great info GSL!
    I had slotted rotors on my old WRX. Noticed a little bit of a deifferance but i also went to a less superoior pad and that was the biggest change (for the worse)

    My 6MPS will be up for at least front rotors in about 5,000kms-10,000kms i think (they look a fair bit lipped at 62,000kms)

    Thanks alot GSL! Great info, i used to run the A1RM pads on my skyline, but they were rather squeaky. Is that normal ?

    It's very normal of those 4 pot sumitomo calipers that come on the Skyline yep! Squeal is caused by harmonics between the backing plate and the caliper, and nothing related to the pad material itself (unless it's a very low speed grinding noise, like the last 5 meters when you stop at lights...).

    The 4 pot Sumitomo calipers that come on the Skylines (and also WRX's, S14/5, 300ZX) are renowned for noise no matter what performance pads you put in them... I've personally had the A1RM in 3 cars now, and never heard any noise (except for one car which had a very faint off pedal rub, but this goes away with time as the pads bed in and face up better to the rotor), and no one that's bought them for the MPS's have said anything..... yet
