For the record - my opinion, of this you may be sure, I may be wrong; nevertheless.
Scrubbing so you are cutting your sidewalls, there's nothing to argue about. That shit is f***ing stupid. Please, please if you are going to fit these extreme fitments, go the extra yard so it is legal and without serious compromises. It's not that hard - it probably wont cost you anywhere near as much as your wheels did.
I measured up guard clearances before I bought wheels. It's not rocket science, it's simple math. Some of the fitments mentioned here will not work legally, or without compromising the engineering, suspension etc. UNLESS you go the extra mile.
the above 235/40 fitment is pretty much the comfortable limit of tyre and wheel width. Anything beyond it, either in lower offset or wider rim or tyre, is going to have rub issues. 225/45 on them will have minor rub issues. remember offset rules - always lower, with a difference no greater than 12.5mm (Making +40 the minimum offset)
So for 8.5" rims, OR offsets +45 or lower there are a number of things you would need to look at. Rolling and flaring gaurds. Trimming the rear wheel well. Fitting wheel-arch mouldings (they do exist) so the wheel genuinely does not protrude from bodywork....shorter suspension travel, stiffer for obvious reasons, negative camber at rear...
Instead of pretending that fitments that need these things don't need them, wouldn't it be much more productive and far more interesting to discuss those things?
Now _this_ shit is ***ing stupid:
