Thread: Perception of MPS's amongst other performance car owners

There's a discussion on MSF about whether or not drivetrain loss is really as high as people say. I'm starting to believe the power to the wheels difference isn't all that much and that it's the weight difference that really kills us. I think a good test is to do a 40km run between the 6 and 3 but put like 200kg of stuff in the 3 and see what actually happens.

i like the sleeper look too. my last car was kind of a bit of a stand out car. everyone trying to go u at every set of lights (mainly commodores) hehe but i like the sleeper look. that way u surprise a lot of ppl when they take off fast and then glance over and u right beside them and they are like "!?" let the car do the talking then they will suddenly become interested about the 3 and what's under the hood, etc lol

Torque is certainly important but it's only one part of the equation. Power expressed as hp or kw is not directly measurable and is merely a description of an ability to do work. Torque is one component of power, rpm is another. When we measure these two variables we can calculate the theoretical power an engine will produce.

But there is a better way: weight-shifted horsepower, which is an unadulterated measurement of mass/distance/velocity i.e. it measures how much work was done and in very unbiased terms tells you how much power was required to do that work. Weight-shifted horsepower is a great equaliser because it is unaffected by traction, reaction time, driver skill or many of the other variables.

A quick check on my trusty slide rule suggests the stock VE SS has 232 weight-shifted kw and the MPS 201 weight-shifted kw. Quite a bit different to the claimed 260kw and 190kw.

EDIT: Sorry that last MPS figure should be 182 weight-shifted kw. I accidentally used modded MPS data. But it still suggests Mazda understated the power.

Most people i talk to don't even know what an MPS is (which can be good but also frustrating) and seeing as the 6MPS isn't produced anymore i'm guessing they'll never be recognised (the ultimate slleeper)

Peak Power output is for talking, torque is for winning.

Couldn't see, it was dark... He had some tool number plate as well which made it more satisfying...
Took what looked like 2 heavily modded series 8 RX7's also, with big front mounts and big dickheads driving with no tshirts on, music pumping, dancing with hands out the window, and weaving in and out of traffic. He was pretty upset that I got him in front of his mate, and started driving up my ass with his blow-off like a ****n retard, so I put my hazards on to shit him more. Priceless
Whats the point of oversized turbo's and front mounts with stock internals? No wonder he lagged for half an hour before it even came on boost.

one of my favourites was rolling up to the lights next to a M5. Revved the engine (expecting to get flogged), and the bloke looked across at me as if to say, my mum drives one of those. I drilled it through 1st and 2nd then realised he didn't start well, slowed down and met him at the next lights. He looked shocked - then soundly whupped my arse.

Oh that and the myriad of stock beamers who think they are tough. These are more satisfying to me than the commodores. I have even gotten so tired of smashing them that my wife has to encourage the drag - probably one of the reasons I married her

allot of people know they are fast, fast enough to ruffle feathers of the big boys anyways, i have had some very interesting scalps
cops have started to really get attention of these things keep an eye out for those black unmarked STTF Golf GTi's

    evo 9 stock
M3 not the v8 one the model before (he was pissed too)
SS commodores every day of the week
GTS commodores (also lost very badly to a supercharged VE GTS)
    WRX's all the time
STi been beaten by my mates heavily modded one and can beat stockers.
Series 8 RX-7 (my mates car, we are so even its not funny he has 176.9RWKW and i have 176.5 FWKW) i make more torque but he is lighter i think, on a mountain run we are preety even.
R32 and R33 skylines are EASY!!!
180SX and 200SX can usually be put away with ease...

people are really starting to know they are fast, but they dont know how fast, and will jostle through the traffic to race you..

u should be able to beat all those cars mentioned above in stock form. excpetig

not GTR's or the new gts R8 .........they are very quick in a straight line

the fastest car i have ever seen was a red evo 3 that looked straight and stock as rock, but when it wound up it sounded like a jetfighter and i was left in a cloud of smoke hahaha.

yes R8s are fast, but good tyres make a huge difference, the mps is harder to launch than a space shuttle, but if you get it right, its very very fast.

Racing them yes, but blowing them off to see the priceless look on their faces in your mirror = win.

    +1

Had a funny one on the way to basketball tonight. Came up to the traffic lights, white mid 90's wide body whitegoods coloured Camry there already. It has some fugly body kit, big chromies and fart exhaust on it...you can guess where this is going

Guy looks over at me and revs it...I started to laugh (couldn't help myself!), lights go green and off he farts...revving the ring out of it. I decide "why not" so get rolling in 1st, then put it in 2nd and mash the pedal...he backs off as soon as he hears my turbo spool up through the intake..haha! I quite enjoyed the "?!" look on his face while he tried to figure out what my car was

quite the sleeper advantage not having a turbo badge on ur car

i get heaps of tools wanting a go, probably because they have raced stockies b4 and want to make lunch of me.................

no eating for them. especially with the semi-slicks nice and warm.

so i suppose i get the shocked look, "wtf is in that?" that u guys do.
