Track Time Comparison

Hey guys,

Just wondering if anyone had or knew where to get hold of some track time information for the Mazda 3 MPS.

I would be particularly interested to see how it fares on track against the usual suspects like WRX, XR5T, Lancer, etc but also I would LOVE to see how it competes (on track) against the Falcon and Commodore "performance" models.

From my experience, it depends more on what's been done to the car and who is driving it than how the car came from the factory. But assuming stock v stock I would say something like:

EVO > Focus RS > WRX = MPS > GTI > XR5 = XR6 Turbo > SS V8

For example, my car is comfortably faster than stock WRX's at the track days I go to but I have modded mine a little bit. Similar thing can be said for all these cars. The XR5 is one car that has a very cheap front diff, but one of the first mods that their owners get is a proper LSD upgrade, that alone will put them on basically the same level as the MPS.

As for top gear power laps, it depends on the track you're talking about but the Rx8 and MPS run comparable times around tight courses. The top gear test track is a power track tho, and for that reason I would probably assume the MPS is about half a second faster than the Rx8 as an educated guess.

It would be great if TopGear acknowleged the existence of the 3 MPS. I'd love to see them do a Focus ST vs GTI vs MPS vs Megane shootout =)

Somewhere in internet land there is quite possibly of an artical either Wheels or Motor did comparing many cars including both the 6 and 3 on the track.
I can not for the life of me remember the results.
But it might be worth searching for.

There was also the resent-ish hot hatch shootout. The MPS did not fair well.

That motor mag thing was a tuner challenge, the Golf that competed had about $30 000 worth of work done to it and was running semi slicks, the MPS had basic mods and shit street tyres. It didn't have a chance.

Same track, same timing equipment, same testing rules, mostly the same driver. That's about the most fair comparison I've seen.
