Thread: Shift Counter Weights question

    Default Shift Counter Weights question

Im sure there is prob an easy explanation but what would be the difference between buying a lightened shift weight and cutting your stock weight in half? Obviously if its looks ur after you would buy a nice coloured one but if i shave weight off my factory weight will that be ok?

Most mods increase the weight, certainly of shift KNOBS.

How do u mean 'increase weight'? My mod would require cutting away the excess weight from the standard shift weight.

All the aftermarket shift weights are lighter.

I reckon you can go for it. Just take even amounts off either end.

Alternatively just take it off all together and see what that feels like, experience the two extremes. Should give you an idea how much you want to take off.

Keep in mind that with the stock shift plate your shifts might feel pretty 'lost', and if too light it might even pop out of gear.

OK i just gave the stock weight a good trimming off both sides evenly. Will post pics in a few minutes and on road test. I did look at the Sure website and saw they trimmed 70% weight on the standard weight so i basically did the same and neatened it up with spray paint. Saved $77 in the process so hopefully all is good.

    Default Mod shift weight

Just went for a run and it has helped heaps. Definitely made the throw alot lighter and stays in gear. Total weight reduction was 56%. Very happy with result.

A few FMIC setups (e.g CS for MPS6) have a curved TB inlet pipe. It is intuitive to install it so the curve is downwards but this fouls the counterweight. Rather than cut or move the shift counterweight, simply rotate the TB inlet pipe in its silicone sockets so the curved part of the pipe is convex face to the front and then it no longer fouls the counterweight. About 30 degrees of rotation will do it, if I recall. A simple solution in such cases, really!
