Thread: smoke coming out of exhausts on start-up

  1. Default smoke coming out of exhausts on start-up

    Hi guys,

New to the forum, am so glad i found this place, just from reading through a few threads i have learned soo much about the MPS in general, and i really appreciate all the knowledge that everyone here brings to the table, you are all a wealth of information, thank you.

I have a query/problem, i purchased an MPS Gen II a few weeks back, everytime i go and start it up, a bif woft of smoke comes out from the exhausts for about the first 15 seconds, then the smoke clears. I dont know whether this is normal or not, but i have never seen a car do this before, nor did i notice it at the dealership when i was test-driving it. It was a dealer demo with no previous owner besides the dealership, so im hoping they didnt do anything suspect to the car, i can never trust dealerships.

My old car was a 3 Neo Gen I and everytime i would service it, but only after a service, it would do that exact same thing, which is normal.

Is this just something that is unique with the MPS3 or turbo cars in general??? I have never owned a turbo car before in my life and cannot figure out whether this is normal or not.

    PLEASE HELP!!!

    Smoke or steam?
In this cold weather it is highly likely that moisture has built up in the exhaust system which is then being heated and cleared out.

Might also be your cat needing time to warm up.

I'm not saying that this isn't something serious... But I'm giving u alternatives to serious things

Thanks for the quick replies guys.

luke - It does it on cold start-ups, i have not actually driven the car around enough as i havent had the time with work, to take it for a drive somewhere when it is already warm, i will let you know as soon as i do though. But i have noticed it happening everytime i do it on cold start-ups. Does your Gen II do this at all?

Tiptoe - I dont think its moisture, i started it today this afternoon at around 4pm, to show a work mate the car, it was out in the sun all day and even though its relativley cold still(17-18degrees) i dont think that is the issue, but i will definitley check it out and see from up-close whether its smoke or steam, the texture of the 'smoke' is not very thick, but im very fussy about my cars, especially when i buy a new one, i want to treat it as best i can for as long as i can.

Does anybody else's Gen II give out a little smoke on start up? I MIGHT just be paranoid, but until i am 100% sure what it is i will remain paranoid! I LOVE THIS CAR!

Sorry, can you explain what a 'cat' is? Ill be the first to tell you that im not 100% knowledgable about cars, i came on this forum wanting to change my engine oil because i know Mazda is probably putting in average rubbish, and now im doing my engine oil, gearbox oil and getting a tuneup at Tunehouse!

A test to see if it is moisture or cat warming up is to drive your car around till it's fully warm.
    Stop. Turn it off.
Leave it for a minute and start it up again.
If no smoke occurs again... Then it is most likely one of the two things I said.
If there is smoke even on a hot start... Then im completely wrong

Snap, crackle, pop pop pop pop pop pop pop pop

Thanks Tiptoe ill do it now and check it out. i also have a loud timing belt, although i can only hear it when i look under the bonnet wtih the car running, it doesnt sound right, its a pingy sort of noise, wing-wing-wing-wing-wing non stop. Now ive been reading through the gearbox oil sticky thread and im wondering whether THAT is the noise im referring to??? But if it is then why would it be coming out of/or near the timing belt??? Any help would be appreciated.

Im 99% sure its ur cars choke on. Its pumping fuel in on cold start, once warm it will come off hence no smoke... being new i seriously doubt its a cat issue....

Interesting, did you make any changes to your engine oil for it to stop or did it just stop by itself?

In case you haven't had a look a cat is a catalytic converter. It's job is to remove the nasty stuff from you exhaust, the truly toxic stuff, not CO2.

That noise you hear under your bonnet is probably just the injectors, from what I understand the Direct Injection nature of them (much higher pressure than your normal car) makes them quite noisy.

The smoke problem people mention is the seals failing but that results in large amounts of smoke, think unable to see cars behind you style.

Injectors aren't noisy. The pump is...

I never said it was a cat "issue".
Cats take time to warm up and do their job properly.

Hence why on a lot of cars there are air pumps with the sole purpose of them being to speed up the warming process of the cat.

As above , normal . especially if your car is garaged . It is a combination , auto choke (fuel) and water vapour from cooled down exhaust.
You should notice ,water drops on floor at initial start up, once engine is up to operation temp ,no more (smoke) or steam.
Check your exhaust tips they will be black, excess carbon . These cars run pig rich .
Good idea is to every now an then ,give the car a solid boot under full boost ,as this will help to rid exhaust of excess carbon, whist under full boost ,look at rear vision and notice the cloud of shit escaping. Ha Ha Ha .

Yep, like these guys, to me looks like steam/water vapor. After a 5-10 minutes it's all clear.

Does it look like this? Too early for porn?
