Default I need to make my windshield surface slick...HELPPPPP!

My wipers always rub on my windshield as they swipe across. I initially thought it was the wiper blades themselves and replaced them 6 months ago, but they still did it. I soon realised it was probably the windshield that was causing it, as I had made the surface of it non slippery by using Armourall Glass cleaner spray. Lesson learned, I bought a bottle out convenience, however even though I've stopped using it and have used RainX on it, the wipers still rub. Not always initially, but after a while they start rubbing against the windshield. Is there a way I can make my windshield surface slick again so there is no rubbing caused with the wiper blades?

This is the one thing bugging me at the moment with my car and it has been for a while. Any help would be appreciated.

    Kind Regards,

rainX would be my suggestion but since it has not worked claim a new windscreen on your auto insurance usually free or a once of small fee

Thanks for the suggestions. Doing an insurance job on my windscreen is not something I would consider, spirits might work. I'll give it a good working over this weekend and see if it improves since it's raining in Sydney.

if its covered use it...as its "damaged" ...most insurance co's give 1 free windscreen per year...so why not?

im on my 3rd (1st broken by stone/rock @100km/h, 2nd scratched by window wiper breaking)

If I understand you correctly, sounds like the problem is solved when you apply RainX but when the RainX wears off after a few weeks the problem returns?

If that's the case keep an eye on this forum, as we have a product a couple of weeks away from release that will give you the effects of RainX for about 12 months (or 30000km). Current testers (including my MPS) have had the product on for months with no change to the sealants effects.

Good question and I don't know. I doubt it has anything to do with the Armorall stuff because it would have long worn off.

I think there is probably too much pressure being applied between the wiper and the windscreen or the angle the wipers contact the windscreen is wrong. I do recall reading somewhere that this can be adjusted but I don't know how.

Are you sure it's the windscreen, and not the wipers? I recently looked into replacing my wiper blades with a set of "silicone" blades, thinking they would have better "slip" over the screen. I was told that in fact silicone blades are a poor choice over normal rubber ones as the silicone "grips" as it moves over the screen, giving that aggravating noise like someone running a fingernail down a blackboard.

You did say that you replaced your blades recently, but did you replace silicone with silicone? IF you arent sure (or cant remember) if they were silicone ones you fitted then a $10 a set of rubber replacement blades might be a good investment.

Hmmm you guys got me thinking now. Well the Rain X only last a day or two in constant rain and then the wipers start rubbing against the windshield again. I replaced the wiper blades 6 months back, so it can't be them. However now that Joel has mentioned the wipers putting too much pressure against the windhshield has got me thinking.

It's just that, I bought the car brand in December 2007 and this problem came about towards the end of last year. Hence why I thought maybe it was the blades. I've got my service coming up in a few weeks time, so I'll have to get them to have a look at it then.

    Cheers,

    Senthu

    Default Sticky Windscreen

Hi, May I suggest getting a clay bar use it with window cleaner (as the usual clay bar lubes will make your windscreen oily and a bugger to clean.) You find what the cause will be is more than likely some sort of industrial fallout, weather it's overspray or just a build up of road grime the claybar will usually take it straight off. If that doesn't work you can also use a FINE grade steel wool then follow it up with the claybar, neither will scratch or damage your windscreen. I have been doing my windows like this for the last 10-15 years as it works an absolute treat.

    Cheers

Both Brad and I have had new windscreens fitted on our MPS's from Obrien's glass, both downright dangerous in the wet, smeared badly.

I used Rain-X to clean and coat the windsceen a few days after having it fitted on a trip to Wagga as I was so peeved with the visibility through the new screen. Worked wonders, I have re-done the screen with rain-X 3 times over the last 18 months. Still with original blades and it stll wipes perfectly with no streaking or smears.

So convinced I use rain-x on the vintage cars - hand operated wiper on 1924 Dodge hardly needs using. The "prince of darkness" LUCAS wipers on two of my other cars have a tendency to stop working at the wrong time so the rain-x is a great help.
