Just got home from installing the Shifter Base Bushings and lubricating the shifter ball.
-Shifts are now smooth, precise and consistent.
-Much of the hesitation to shift in and out of gear has been resolved.
-Works well and feels good with the 2XS Short Shift Plate.
... And this is with a broken Driver's Side Engine Mount and 130,000kms on the car. VMX 80 Transmission Oil to come next service.
Verdict: Do it.
How To:
1) The centre console comes apart in 2 sections. Remove the rear (Cup Holder) section first by opening the arm rest and carefully pulling the rear centre console section upwards. It will unclip, slide up and over the handbrake lever.
2) Remove the gear knob, shift boot and change tray. The front centre console section will now unclip and be removed similarly to the rear section.
Note: Take care to not drop anything down into the console, objects can be difficult to retrieve.
3) There are 4 mounting points for the shifter base. Remove the shifter base mounting bolts. At this stage you may need to remove one of the shifter linkages to gain access.
4) Remove the mounting bolt sleeves from the rubber mounting grommets.
5) Remove the rubber mounting grommets.
6) The 2XS Shifter Base Bushing are mounted with the machined step facing up, and will mate with the shifter base mounting holes.
7) Place the bushings under the shifter base (Front pair first), put the mounting bolts back through and finger tighten them slightly.
8) Once all 4 mounting bolts and bushings are in place begin to tighten the bolts slowly. Do not fully tighten the mounting bolts until all 4 bushings have located themselves.
Note: Do not over-tighten the shifter base mount bolts. This may result in stressing and cracking the shifter base mount holes over time.
9) Replace the shifter linkage, if removed.
10) Replace the front centre console section, shifter boot and gear knob.
11) Replace the rear centre console section.
12) Congratulate yourself on a job well done and getting that bushing/bolt/grommet/coin/metal sleeve back out from the console after dropping it down there.
